Joe Gomez opens up on Raheem Sterling altercation

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling were involved in an altercation in November and Gomez has spoken about the impact of the incident. Sterling and Gomez had clashed at the dying minutes of the game between the Reds and the Citizens. “Don’t f**k with me, Joe. Don’t f**k with me,” said Sterling. While Joe Gomez replied:  "Come on!" Following a bust-up, Sterling was axed from England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro. “It was a difficult period,” Gomez told The Athletic. “I enjoy football, it’s my passion, but there are a lot of things that come with it, like the limelight. That’s the thing that I didn’t enjoy." During the game with Montenegro, where England were 6-0 up, England fans decided to boo the Liverpool player. “If anything it has made me a bit more stand-offish,” he said of the reception. “But in terms of the actual situation (with Sterling), what happened happened. We spoke. It was done. As a team it was done. So in my head, it was done. It was just then that the game happened with the reception.” England will be in action later this month for a pair of friendlies against Italy and Denmark but Gomez hasn’t considered the spotlight being on him again. “I haven’t really processed it," he added. "With what happened brings experience. I went out to train and I knew that the first session after it came out publicly, eyes were going to be on me. I was never used to that before.
