Jamie Carragher left red-faced as his Rafa Benitez Everton comments backfire

Jamie Carragher has been left red-faced after Rafa Benitez was sacked by Everton. The former Liverpool man used to play under the Spanish boss at Liverpool for six years. So he did know well how the manager works with the team. Earlier, Carragher claimed that Benitez is the right man to take charge of the Toffees. "The reason I think he’s the perfect manager for Everton is that he’s different from [Carlo] Ancelotti," he said on the All Together Now podcast last June. "I think Ancelotti was a manager who won big trophies at big clubs, I think Benitez has had most success at teams that are fighting the big clubs. He was successful at Valencia against Barcelona and Real Madrid. "At Liverpool, Champions League, FA Cup and Champions League final, and at that stage we weren’t great, but those weren’t his best Liverpool teams. "His best Liverpool teams came after that and we didn’t win anything." However, earlier this month, as things didn't go well for Benitez at Goodison Park, Carragher claimed it was always going to be difficult for the manager after his past at Anfield. He said on Sky Sports: “I wouldn't say you've got to get behind him because it's always going to be difficult getting behind an ex-Liverpool manager. “I wouldn't like to see an ex-Man Utd or ex-Everton manager at Liverpool. I would find it difficult to get behind him, certainly if things were going badly as it is now. “The onus is on Rafa Benitez to turn the supporters around with results." Benitez was sacked after a six-month charge following Everton's defeat to Norwich City. The Toffees are currently in 16th place in the Premier League table near the relegation zone.
