Arsenal boss Unai Emery hailed Mesut Ozil’s return to action as Arsenal secured their place in Europa League’s last 16.
The German superstar made only his second start in 11 games to help the Gunners secure a 3-1 aggregate win against BATE Borisov at the Emirates.
With all eyes on his return, Arsenal's No.10 - back at the heart of Emery's 4-2-3-1 formation - played his part in an extremely comfortable victory, making more passes than any of his teammates (83), except Granit Xhaka (105) and boasting an 89% success rate.
Of those 83 passes, 47 were made in the first period, as Arsenal took charge, and 36 in the second half, as they eased off,
Boss Unai Emery was full of praise for Ozil’s contribution.
He said: “Today Mesut was important and positive for the team and I am happy with the way he played. He showed us the performance he wanted us to see and he said to me that he wants to carry on like this and be available to continue helping the team. We are going to play a lot of matches in the next weeks and sometimes he will be in the starting team and sometimes he will be on the bench. But today his spirit was good. His spirit like today is good and his quality and capacity and combination with some players is good, like with Guendouzi and Micki and Iwobi in the attacking third. I think we need every player and today playing Mesut was important and positive.”
