George Russell has spoken out on Lewis Hamilton's decision to join Ferrari in 2025.
The news of Hamilton joining Scuderia Ferrari shook the world as it was in a way unexpected. The seven-time world champion will be partnering with Charles Leclerc starting from 2025, meanwhile, Russell will have a new partner in the next season.
After Mercedes officially confirmed Hamilton's departure from the team in 2025, Russell took to Instagram and shared a message: "It’s been special racing alongside you, @lewishamilton. Let’s make this season one to remember."
And now, the 26-year-old has spoken out on the move as he revealed that it was a surprise to him.
Speaking during the Back At The Base Podcast, Russell said: “I stayed at Toto’s the night before and Lewis came over for breakfast the following day so I thought – you know, it’s probably the first time they’ve seen each other all year, I had an event to go to [so] I left early.”
“Toto called me about an hour later saying ‘you will not believe what I’ve just been told.’”
“I was very surprised to be honest, because Lewis has got such a legacy with Mercedes. And even prior to Mercedes with McLaren. I respect his decision, it’s for sure a bold move.”
