"I apologise": Jamie Carragher names Manchester United star the biggest surprise of PL season after brutal criticism

Jamie Carragher has expressed regret and issued an apology for his initial doubts about Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez.

Carragher had previously criticized United manager Erik ten Hag's decision to deploy Martinez in central defense and even advised the club to remove the £55 million defender. His initial concerns regarding the 25-year-old primarily revolved around his five-foot nine-inches height which makes him the shortest center-back in England's top division.

However, Martinez has proven the critics wrong with his outstanding performances this term, establishing himself as a crucial player at Old Trafford.

"Any centre-half coming to the Premier League who is under six foot, you are thinking they are going to have a problem but he hasn't... When you are talking about the role of Casemiro, I think there is a massive drop off when Lisandro Martinez is not in the Manchester United team. Defensively but also his ability on the ball in terms of playing out from the back." Carragher said when speaking about Martinez on Sky Sports

The pundit named the Argentina international as his biggest surprise of the Premier League season and added:

"He [Martinez] is a warrior, he is a leader, and when you think of that spine, he and Casemiro have made a big difference. So I apologise to Lisandro Martinez. Manchester United fans please stop tweeting me!"
