Hull KR coach Tony Smith makes prediction over Super League with relegation off table

Hull KR head coach Tony Smith has made a prediction over Super League. He expects Hull KR to play their part in an entertaining second half of the season with relegation off the table. On Monday night it was announced that there will be no relegation this year in the wake of Toronto Wolfpack’s decision to withdraw from Super League. Rovers are therefore assured of a top-flight place in 2021, leading some to question how they will approach the rest of the season. However, Smith has insisted there is plenty of motivation in the KR camp. Speaking to Hull Live, Rovers boss said: “I struggle to understand when people think the players will take it easy. I’ve got some players playing for contracts for next year and you can’t tell me they’re not going to be trying their hardest. “I’ve got some young people who are trying to break through and establish themselves so they’re going to try do that as soon as they can. I’m a bit different to the way most people think. I see some people make comments about games not being worthwhile or that they don’t have a meaning. “I find it really hard to comprehend when people say that. I don’t know if they know athletes that well. They’re ambitious people who want to make the most of their careers." KR were involved in some tense encounters in the latter stages of last season as they fought for their place in Super League. And Smith believes fans will see a difference with the pressure off. "I think there’s a different mindset when there isn’t relegation,” he added. “Rather than trying not to lose games when there is that pressure, teams try to win games more. I think it develops more attractive rugby league. “I’d argue that the best phase of Super League that I’ve seen in terms of quality rugby league was during the licensing period when there wasn’t relegation. They were entertaining because there wasn’t that pressure. But when you look at all the clubs promoted during the Super League era, how many success stories have we actually seen? “I think promotion and relegation keeps the big teams at the top and the lesser teams at the bottom. It’s a system that almost encourages that. In my eyes it’s a flawed system so it’s a real positive. “I could be wrong but I think you’ll see some real entertaining rugby league for the remainder of this year and if they reintroduce relegation again next year I think you’ll go back to teams trying not to lose rather than trying to win.” Source- HullLive
