AS Roma and Armenia National team star Henrikh Mkhitaryan has revealed how he once outraged Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho when they worked together at Manchester United.
Mkhitaryan played for United in 2016-2018, following his move from Borussia Dortmund.
The determined player spent most of his time at the training ground and it offended his boss Mourinho.
During an interview with Russian Blogger “KRASAVA”, Mkhitaryan revealed “It was right, that Mourinho called Mino Raiola and asked him, why I am going to the training camp earlier than him. Once, he noticed me during the breakfast and said, “The media criticize me because of you”. I said “How? I didn’t do something deliberately to make them criticize you.”
Mkhitaryan recalled the time when he joined Manchester United and told how it happened: “I was with Mino Raiola and Mourinho called him. Raiola said, “It’s Mourinho, he wants to talk to you”. I spoke with him and he said: “as you know I will be the manager of United and I really want you”. I didn’t think twice, as only a year was left in my contract with Borussia Dortmund. I needed to make a decision to sign an extension or move away from the club. I decided to join United because you will get the chance to play alongside Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata only once in a lifetime.”
Mkhitaryan was asked, whether he would sign a contract with United again if had known what will happen at the end, the Armenia international answered: “Yes. I don’t regret my move to Old Trafford.”
The Armenia international said he can’t explain what happened with Mourinho.
“I can’t say what was going on his head. But I can only say, I worked hard every day and thought I would get the chance. And it happened, I played. I played in the one game and then was on the bench or even at the stands. But it didn’t break me, as I had a dream, a dream to play and enjoy my game. At the end of the year, we won the Europa League and two other cups.”
Former United player was asked did he had a conflict with the Portuguese coach.
“Yes, and I understood I don’t have anything more to do here. As I worked, I helped the club, I scored and assisted but someone was not delighted, then thought I can’t do anything. I don’t want to waste my time. I wanted to go further and play football,” said Mkhitaryan.
Mkhitaryan also admitted that Mourinho was the hardest coach in his career.
“I can say, Mourinho was the hardest coach during my career. He is a winner. He wants you to do everything he demands from you. It’s really hard to work with him. We had disagreements and conflict, but it doesn’t affect our work as we won three trophies together.”
After two years at United, Mkhitaryan joined Arsenal and currently, he plays for AS Roma on a loan deal.
