G(Old) battle. Liverpool vs Manchester United. MATCH PREVIEW

Battle of managers Liverpool vs Manchester United

English Premier League. Week 8

October 17, 21:00 CET

Venue: Anfield, Liverpool, England

Referee: Anthony Taylor

The clashes of the Red Devils and the Reds have always been one of the most interesting antagonisms of the English Premiere League. These are two of the most decorated teams in the history of English club football, despite passive and unfortunate performance in the last couple of seasons. This year, however, the clashes will be a bit more “spicy”, as two of the highest ranked managers are now heading the teams. Alongside with strategic management of the teams, these coaches are also very keen on giving snaps on their interviews. So, alongside with harsh battle on the pitch, we are also expecting to see psychological machinations by the managers. This match is expected to be extra entertaining.

Form before International Break

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has already complained about this important being scheduled right after the international break, as they will lose some of the form accumulated in the opening rounds of the league. So, how good the teams where before the break?

Liverpool have made one of the best starts in the recent years. Only one loss and one draw in the first seven games, with 5 wins in their active. Moreover, the last four games are won, showing Jurgen Klopp’s team’s incredible form before the international break. Important to note, that due to being unfit, one of the team’s leaders Adam Lallana was not presented in England’s squad for the international break and had time to prepare for the game.

Manchester United have more international players and are expected to show some signs of tiredness. Jose Mourinho’s team, however, did not seem to be in a good form before the break either. Being in almost optimal squad (with only Mkhitaryan and Jones missing at the time), the Red Devils managed to win only one clash from the last four in the league, and with two lost. The team’s performance in the European arena was not a perfect one either. They are the third in their Europa League group.

Despite controversial last years by MU, winning Liverpool in English Premiere League games does not seem to be a problem for the Red Devils. Last four EPL games between these rivals ended to be MU wins. However, in the Europa League play-offs, when these teams met in early 2016, Liverpool was keen on winning at home (2-0), and record an away draw (1-1), which allowed them to proceed.

Missing players

Liverpool will miss Sheji Ojo and Georginio Wijnaldum only, as Adam Lallana seems to be ready for the clash.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s and Luke Shaw’s fitness for the Monday game. Phil Jones still remains injured.
