Gary Neville has praised Joao Cancelo as the Manchester City defender continues to grow into this role at the club. The Portuguese international has become a regular starter for Pep Guardiola in the Premier League this season.

Cancelo has already started 11 of City’s 15 Premier League matches this time around. However, his ability in possession and his athleticism has seen him rank as one of the most offensive full-backs in the Premier League this season, despite playing on the opposite side.

“I had him at Valencia for that period of time I was there and I have to say, I absolutely loved him,” Neville said during commentary. “He was very young at the time and just emerging, but I played him every single game, sometimes as a right-winger. He was young at the time, but he was brilliant.

“His athleticism, his quality, his enthusiasm to play football, was fantastic. I always knew he’d play for some of the biggest clubs. He went to Juventus, and for Inter Milan as well.”
