Gary Neville makes Diogo Jota verdict after Cristiano Ronaldo frustration in Portugal Euro 2020 opener

Gary Neville has revealed he has 'sympathy' for the Liverpool attacker Diogo Jota after his recent performance in their Euro 2020 opening match against Hungary. The 24-year-old cut a frustrated figure as he trudged off after 81 minutes at the Puskas Arena before three goals in under 10 minutes got Fernando Santos' side off to a flying start in their defence of the European Championships. The Liverpool ace had a number of chances throughout the game, including a moment inside five minutes when he opted to shoot rather than tee up captain Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite forcing Peter Gulacsi into action, the former Real Madrid star, who was in acres of space on the edge of the box, dramatically gestured his frustration towards his Portuguese teammate. Neville, who was analysing the game as part of ITV's coverage of Euro 2020, said: “A lot of the first half seemed to have revolved around him. "It’s a question of whether he (Jota) should square it to Ronaldo. I think if you are cool and composed then you do pass it to him because he’s such a brilliant finisher. The Sky Sports pundit then hinted at a potential lack of confidence in Jota's performance: “I think this is a good chance. His touch lets him down. Ordinarily there, Jota would take that towards goal and right into the top corner," he added. “With this one, he is nearest to goal (Gulacsi denies with his feet). A question mark over whether Fernandes was in a better position. I have some sympathy for him because I don’t think Fernandes would have had time to react.” Source - Liverpool ECHO Join us on Telegram!/ Follow us on Twitter!
