Frank Lampard's press conference: New Chelsea head coach speaks to the media after move from Derby

Frank Lampard has become Chelsea head coach, the club has announced. Lampard returned to Stamford Bridge having signed a three-year deal. Ahead of the Blue’s pre-season tour, which starts tomorrow, Lampard has faced the press. Here is a full transcript of what he said during his first press conference as Chelsea manager. “It's important to address the fact I was fortunate to have a good opportunity at Derby, to the whole club, the fans and the staff. It wasn't an easy decision because we had a good year. Having been a manager at Derby I understand the pressures on this side of the fence are different. I'm not apprehensive, I am a realist, I understand what is wanted from me and I will try to deliver. When I came back with Derby the support I got was surreal. Now I am here, I don't want to dwell on emotions too much, but every manager has a tingle when the fans sing their name. But I am looking forward to the Leicester game.” “This is the one club that made a decision, as a club that I played for 13 years – the possibility to manage this club, these fans, these players it was huge. I thought about my experience a lot, I know it is an obvious question. One year in management and the Chelsea job comes round, and football is littered with stories of managers who have done well and others who have not. Whether I have one year or ten years, I have to prove I can deliver. I love this club and want to do the best for this club. I played here for many years, I know there are standards. Probably there is a baseline of being competitive, and to stay in competitive in the Premier League is a big ask. The expectation is to stay that way. We know there are variables, Man City and Liverpool pulled away and we are under a transfer ban. My instinct is to make sure we stay competitive and challenge.” “Eden is gone, it's not one to dwell on. We wish him well but now it's important what we do. What we do have is a very strong squad and we have young players at a very young age that have the talent, players who in their own way can be huge players for this club. Part of my job will be to develop the great young players we have here. Developing the young players is going to be important, but whether you are 18 or 32, you have to feel Chelsea is your club.”  “My job is now to push on with this group of players and make them successful. Self-proclaimed names and nicknames are not my styles.” “The biggest challenge of my career. My playing career is done, great memories and great challenges along the way. Coming here 19 years ago I remember the radio was on people questioning whether I was worth £11m players. I don't want credit for my playing career One of the benefits is I know the club. I understand what is needed of me.”  “We are starting pre-season tomorrow. Kante is one of the greatest midfield players in the world, one of the pleasures is I am able to work with players of his quality and my job is to get the best out of him in the team.” “Jody Morris is coming with me, we have a really close relationship, friendship and likeminded in the way we think about football. He is a fantastic coach, we have a huge loyalty together. Eddie Newton will be working with us in the first team staff. He brings great experience and quality of coaching. This is not an old boys club, what I am trying to put together is talent, fresh talent. Between us we have many years of coaching between us. What we are trying to do is not just bring in players because they played here, but people with incredible work ethic. The reason Petr Cech is here because of his incredible work ethic, that's what I see we need.”  “When I woke up this morning and it was official, it felt good, I'm not going to lie. But I have to get over that and get down to work tomorrow. Mount and Tomori come back with a clean slate to prove in pre-season they have a chance in the squad going forward. The same for Tammy Abraham. We have a big squad not every one of the young players is going to stay, the development path has to be chosen for some of them. But that will be decided over the course of the next month.” “Nobody has an easy road in football, there are always questions asked of you. I haven't spoken to any of my old managers and as it stands I don't plan to call any of them.”
