Portugal U21 are currently on international duty for the UEFA U21 Championship qualification.

The latest game against Belarus U21 took place in Yerevan, Armenia on June 4, and Rui Jorge’s team celebrated a 5 – 1 win over the opponents.

The captain Fábio Vieira opened the score to give his side the lead, later making it a double. Zé Carlos, João Mário and the team’s topscorer Gonçalo Ramos were also on the scoreesheet.

The only goal from Belarus U21 came by Ilya Vasilevich in the 91st minute of the clash.

Fábio Carvalho was part of Portugal’s U21 squad to face the opponents. In an exclusive interview with Vbetnews, he admitted the game was tough, particularly due to the pitch and the weather.

“It might be an excuse but we are not really used to playing in this humidity. We got the win, the three points which is the most important thing. We had some good beats and then we had some beats we are going to improve. And I am sure we are going to improve for the next game. And we are going to give the performance we want to give,” the 19-year-old star said.

Carvalho was delighted to see Portgual U21 celebrating another win in the tournament with such a massive result. Though, he believes they are capable of doing more.

“It feels good. We played well to get the result,” the future Liverpool player said. “But we can always play better because we know the quality we have. We have such great players who can always impact the game. We can always play better. It was a good performance but it wasn’t our best one.”

After beating Belarus, Portugal U21 are now unbeaten in the group stage and are leading the Group D with seven wins and one draw.

The Esperanças have previously been the European Championship’s Runners-up three times and are yet to win in the tournament.

Carvalho believes his side have high chances in the upcoming Euro U21.

“We are one of the best teams in Europe, if not in the world. And so we know what we are capable of. And we are going to the Euros, hopefully, with the mentality to win,” he said.

Portugal U21 will travel to Liechtenstein to play their next group stage game on June 7, 2022.
