Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany says Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in Premier League history.
Belgium international, who’s returned to Manchester for his testimonial, mentions the impact Virgil had on the Merseyside club since joining them in 2018.
Despite the rivalry between Manchester City and Liverpool, Kompany’s chosen Netherlands national team captain ahead of players like John Terry and Rio Ferdinand.
“I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk,” Kompany said ahead of his testimonial at Etihad Stadium.
“He’s not been on the scene as long as Terry, Ferdinand who have been around for a long time but the signs he’s shown in the last few years show if he had been around longer he’d have been at the top for a long time.
“The Liverpool before Van Dijk and after are a completely different set-up so, I’ll give him that one.”
