Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier is facing a heavy fine and long ban after jumping into the stands and confronting his own fans.
Dier broke into the stands and confronted supporters after their FA Cup defeat to Norwich. He was captured on social media climbing over rows of seats before being involved in a confrontation with fans.
Following the game, Spurs boss was asked about the incident.
“I cannot run away from the question and I think Eric Dier did something that we professionals cannot but, in these circumstances, something that every one of us would do,” Mourinho said. “When someone insults you and your family is there, and your family gets involved with the person that is insulting you, in this case, your younger brother, I think Eric did what we professionals cannot. But, I repeat, probably every one of us would do. I am with the player and understand the player.”
According to the Mirror, Dier will be asked for his version of events and is facing an FA Charge after the altercation.
English football’s governing body are looking into the events, and will initially wait on referee Paul Tierney’s report to see if he witnessed what had happened.
They will speak to Spurs stewards and fans nearby for their observations.
