"Won’t be happening": Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea won't sign £87m player despite scouting mission

Chelsea are unlikely to secure the signing of Benfica defender Antonio Silva this month, according to sports journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Although earlier reports suggested the Blues' interest and the £87 million release clause, the need for such a signing is questioned.

“A deal that probably won’t be happening,” Romano said (via The Chelsea Chronicle) when speaking about Silva's potential move to Stamford Bridge.

Despite injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, Chelsea still have options like Thiago Silva, Axel Disasi, and Levi Colwill. Colwill, primarily a center-back, has been playing at left-back recently.

While the summer may bring changes, the current circumstances don't justify Chelsea spending a significant amount on a new central defender. Even with ongoing links to players like Silva and Ousmane Diomande from Sporting Lisbon, it would be surprising if the club secured such a high-cost signing in the current transfer window.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino will likely rely on existing options like Silva and Disasi for now, with potential reassessment in the summer.
