Wolves pulled off a surprising win by defeating Manchester City 2-1 at Molineux yesterday.
After a recent loss to Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup, many Wolves fans had low expectations for the match. However, Gary O’Neil made some tactical changes by switching to a back three and using wing-backs to counter City's style of play, and it turned out to be a successful strategy.
Although City dominated possession as expected, Wolves managed to create a few meaningful scoring opportunities. Pedro Neto played a key role in the first goal, dribbling a long distance and leaving Phil Foden and Nathan Ake behind before forcing an own goal from Ruben Dias. City equalized through Julian Alvarez, but Hwang Hee-chan scored the winning goal in the second half.
A lot of attention was on Matheus Nunes, who returned to Molineux after going on strike in an attempt to secure a transfer to City during the recent transfer window. It was a difficult day for Nunes as he faced a hostile reception from the home fans, with constant boos.
At halftime, Pep Guardiola substituted him for 18-year-old Oscar Bobb. Despite the tough afternoon for Nunes, he displayed a moment of sportsmanship after the final whistle.
It's evident that Nunes is still respected by his former Wolves teammates, but he remains unpopular among many supporters due to his actions to force the move to City. Journalist Steve Madeley reported after the game that Nunes was seen congratulating his former colleagues, despite the hostility from fans.
