Wolves made some notable signings towards the latter part of the summer transfer window, with the sale of Matheus Nunes paving the way for several new deals.
Despite these reinforcements, there are still evident weaknesses in the squad, while the club is also keeping a watchful eye on their standout performers who are beginning to attract interest from other clubs.
With this in consideration, we've identified five players whose contracts are set to expire in 2024 and whom Gary O'Neil and his board should consider pursuing for a potential move to Molineux.
Here are the five players we believe Wolves should explore as free-agent signings.
Top five free agents Wolves could target in 2024
Gabriel Barbosa - Flamengo
The Brazilian faced challenges in fulfilling his potential. His £25 million transfer from Santos to Inter Milan at the age of 20 had raised expectations of a stellar career.
However, he made just 10 appearances for the Italian club, prompting a return to Brazil and Flamengo, where he has thrived, amassing 139 goals and 38 assists in 242 games. He also boasts 18 caps for Brazil, resulting in five goals.
Now, with his contract set to expire at the end of 2024, there's potential for a January move in the upcoming season, or he might become available for a reasonable fee this season if he decides to leave.
Bringing Barbosa on board could provide the much-needed goal-scoring experience that Wolves require, and he has the potential to form a formidable attacking partnership with Pedro Neto and Hee-Chan Hwang.
Mehdi Taremi - Porto
Taremi garnered interest from some of Europe's top clubs last summer, and his skills and abilities are truly remarkable. He's a forward whose style of play is often likened to that of Harry Kane, and his track record supports this comparison. Having amassed an impressive 82 goals and 50 assists during his time at Porto in Portugal, as reported by TransferMarkt, the Iranian ace's talents are undeniable.
Wolves have been in search of reinforcement in his position, and his combination of creativity and clinical finishing could be a significant asset for the entire team. This potential transfer could prove to be an outstanding addition.
Che Adams - Southampton
If the Midland outfit find themselves unable to secure the services of the previously mentioned options, Adams emerges as a viable alternative.
He was previously associated with a transfer during the summer, and it's unlikely he will stay with Southampton if they fail to achieve promotion. While the 27-year-old may not possess the same level of prolific scoring as the other two strikers, he does bring the advantage of having proven himself in the Premier League.
Tomas Soucek - West Ham United
Once a key defensive midfielder in David Moyes' squad, Tomas Soucek has seen his role diminished since Declan Rice's departure, with Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse becoming the preferred choices.
As a result, the Czech footballer might be hesitant to commit to a new contract, which could present an opportunity for Wolves to leverage his defensive and offensive skills.
Rafa Silva - Benfica
Given Neto's exceptional start to the season, it's widely acknowledged that he may draw attention from various Premier League clubs.
If Neto does depart, Wolves could consider a move to acquire his Portuguese counterpart, Rafa, without incurring a transfer fee. At 30 years of age, the midfielder is currently in his prime playing for Benfica. He has already contributed three goals and four assists in Liga Portugal this season and securing his services would be a significant achievement for Gary O'Neil.
