Mikel Arteta has expressed his vision of an ideal squad for Arsenal, stating that he would like to have 22 outfield players and three goalkeepers. He added that this would be achievable if the club has the financial resources to avoid making frequent changes to the squad, as they have had to do in recent times.
Arsenal has undergone a significant transformation in a short period, going from being unable to qualify for European competition to securing a Champions League spot with games remaining. However, the Spanish coach is determined to continue building on this progress.
Football London suggested three areas, where the club manager should focus on improving
Central Defence
Arteta has a clear preference for right-footed centre-backs on the right side of defence and left-footed centre-backs on the left. Although he deviated from this approach recently by pairing Jakub Kiwior with Gabriel, he is likely to return to his preferred set-up soon. This means that Arsenal will need to bring in a right-footed center-back to the squad. While William Saliba is the preferred option and the club is confident of retaining him with a new deal, Rob Holding struggled during his time on the side. As a result, Arsenal are interested in Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace and have also scouted Edmond Tapsoba of Bayer Leverkusen as potential options.
Central Midfield
Arsenal currently face a shortage of midfielders, as Mohamed Elneny is out injured and Albert Sambi Lokonga seems to have fallen out of favor with Mikel Arteta. As a result, the club is looking to sign another midfielder to strengthen the squad. Jorginho and Thomas Partey have performed well in their positions, while Granit Xhaka has been revitalized in an advanced eight role. Arsenal is interested in signing Declan Rice, who can compete in both positions and provide additional depth to the team.
Despite this, the club also retains an interest in Moises Caicedo. There is speculation that Xhaka may be leaving for Bayer Leverkusen, in which case Rice could be utilized in the more advanced role. Additionally, Emile Smith Rowe has trained in that position this season, and Fabio Vieira has also played there a few times. If all of these players remain with Arsenal, it would give the team a formidable midfield depth.
Forwards
The Gunners' forward line appears to be well-stocked, with multiple options available for each position. However, Arteta wants to have two players for every position, which may require some transfer activity. Reiss Nelson is in the final year of his contract, and if he does not accept a new deal, Arsenal will need to bring in a replacement.
Moussa Diaby of Bayer Leverkusen has been heavily linked with the club recently. However, Emile Smith Rowe is capable of playing in that position, and Leandro Trossard is also versatile enough to operate across the front line.
