Liverpool continue to be heavily linked with the move for Southampton star Romeo Lavia for the summer transfer window.
The Reds will be looking to improve the midfield following the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. Jurgen Klopp's side have already secured the signatures of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, however, the club will still need at least one defensive midfielder to bolster the position.
While Romeo Lavia has long been considered a suitable option to fill the gap, Liverpool are reportedly reluctant to meet the Saints' £50m asking price for securing the move.
Here are three midfield options Liverpool could go for this summer in case of failing to sign Romeo Lavia.

Andre is considered one of the main options to join Liverpool if the Reds give up on their wish to sign Romeo Lavia.
Jurgen Klopp's side have already made a £21 million offer for the Fluminense and Brazil star amid the manager's aim to add new midfield options to the squad.
The 22-year-old Brazilian has already played 144 matches for Fluminense since making his senior squad debut in 2020. He also made his debut for the Brazilian national team in a friendly match against Senegal, which ended in a 4-2 defeat, back in June.
Gabri Veiga

The next player currently in Liverpool's interest is Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga.
The young Spanish international had an impressive season in La Liga, contributing 11 goals and four assists. This explains why Celta Vigo's new manager Rafa Benitez is keen to hold onto him.
The Reds are reportedly interested in signing the 21-year-old talent this summer, though they could decide on loaning him back to his current club if the bid is accepted. Jurgen Klopp is eager to improve the squad, and the youngster's future development will only help the German to lead his side to success.
Manu Kone

Kone has emerged as one of the names on Liverpool's wishlist for the summer transfer window, though the pursuit came to a halt after the player's latest knee injury suffered while on duty for France in the U21 Euros against Switzerland.
Initially given a six-week recovery time, the 22-year-old has joined the Borussia Monchengladbach squad to participate in individual training sessions.
Kone could be a good addition to the Liverpool team, however, Jurgen Klopp's side would need flexibility in this situation. They should consider the fact that the player is reported not to be able to enter the pitch until after the September international break.
