Then and Now. Liverpool's defence in 2014/15 and 2019/20: How it changed?

Liverpool are now one of the most powerful teams in the world. They are well known with their attacking trio of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino. But they are also well recognised with their defenders, as they cemented their place in world football as one of the best ones.  Liverpool's defence changed a lot during the recent years, following the appointment of new boss Jurgen Klopp. So how Liverpool's defence looked in the last season without Klopp, when Brendan Rodgers was in charge? It was the 2014-15 season. Liverpool finished the season in the eighth place of the Premier League, they also bowed out of the Champions League at the first hurdle. But in 2018-19 season, with the same defence as now, Liverpool finished as runner-ups in the Premier League. Besides, they also won the most elite European club title, Champions League, sixth time in their history. This season they also looked fine, as they are now 25-points clear of second-placed Manchester City in the Premier League. Indeed, the season is currently suspended due to coronavirus outbreak. Here is how the Liverpool defence looks now and then.

Javier Manquillo played as a right-back in 2014/15 season. He was on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid. During his time at the club, he made 19 appearances and created two assists.

Joe Gomez is an excellent player for Liverpool at centre-back. This season so far, he has made 34 appearances for the Reds. Dejan Lovren, meanwhile, is the only defender from 2014/15 squad, who currently plays for Liverpool. During 2014/15 season he played 38 games for Liverpool and scored once. Now, he lost his place to Gomez.

Virgil van Dijk became only second defender to win the PFA Player of the Year Award in 2019, after John Terry's triumph. This season so far, he has made 41 appearances for the Reds, he has scored four goals and has created two assists. Mamadou Sakho was the one, who played in the centre of defence in 2014/15 season. During the season he made 27 appearances.

Andy Robertson, as well as Trent Alexander-Arnold, loves to help his team not only with his defensive part but also with the offensive part. This season, he has made 41 appearances for the Reds, has scored twice and has created seven assists.
Alberto Moreno was the part of 2014/15 season's defence. In that season, he made 41 appearances, scored twice and created an assist.
