Chelsea have thrown a wrench into Liverpool's pursuit of Southampton's young midfielder Romeo Lavia by tabling a £48 million offer.
While the Reds have been actively pursuing the 19-year-old, negotiations seem to be moving slower than their usual efficient style.
Despite putting forward three bids for the Saints' talent, including a recent £46 million attempt, all have been turned down, according to The Athletic.
The same source has now revealed that the Blues' are also eyeing the Belgian gem. The London club has put forth a £48 million bid, factoring in potential add-ons, in an effort to secure Lavia's services.
Conversations between both sides are ongoing, as the latter still insists on their valuation of £50 million. Despite being seemingly hesitant to meet Southampton's asking price due to the starlet's limited experience, Jurgen Klopp's board are expected to re-enter the bidding fray.
With the Merseysiders in dire need of a player for the number six role, Todd Boehly's potential hijacking of the Lavia deal could force the Premier League rival to shift their focus elsewhere.
