A police officer died in Bilbao last night after violent clashes between Russian and Spanish football fans ahead of a Europa League match. The man suffered a blow to the face having a heart attack. The officer was then taken to hospital where he died.
Around 700 officers as well as 200 extra private security guards were in place to handle any disturbances. Reportedly, 2500 fans from Moscow travelled to the Basque city for the match.
Spartak won the second leg 2-1 but were knocked out 4-3 on aggregate after losing the first leg 3-1 in Moscow.
