Paul Robinson has hailed Timo Werner and Edouard Mendy as Chelsea’s two best signings from last summer. The former England goalkeeper backed Frank Lampard’s side to mount a ‘serious’ title challenge this season. Chelsea spent almost £50m on Germany striker Werner and £22m on goalkeeper Mendy, with both players impressing at Stamford Bridge this season. Robinson said via Metro: "I think Frank Lampard has recruited excellently in the summer. He’s made some big decisions; especially with his goalkeeper. He wanted to change that and he’s brought in Edouard Mendy, who has kept five clean sheets in seven since coming in. "He’s been outstanding; probably one of Frank’s best signings along with Timo Werner. Having played with Frank for England I could always see him going into management but I was surprised at how quickly the transition was. He went to Derby and did extremely well and – probably due to circumstance at Chelsea, and because he’s Frank Lampard – he was given the opportunity. "He’s got fantastic status at Chelsea and it’s always difficult when a club legend takes over as a manager because if things don’t go well it’s a difficult situation. Last season was pretty much a free hit for him with the transfer embargo in place and the ability that he had to bring the youngsters into the first-team. Now he’s blended those youngsters in with world class talent that he’s been able to bring in. That combination means, for me, they’ve got a serious opportunity this season to mount a title challenge."
