Onana responds to Garnacho's racially interpreted post

Andre Onana has responded to Alejandro Garnacho's racially interpreted post via his Instagram stories.

"People cannot choose what I should be offended by. I know exactly what Garnacho meant: power and strength. This matter should go no further" wrote the Red Devils' goalkeeper in his post to defend his teammate's intentions.

It was reported earlier that the Argentine is facing scrutiny for a social media post that could be seen as containing elements of racism, a photo of Onana and his teammates celebrating the shot-stopper's last-minute penalty save that sealed victory for the Reds. More specifically, the caption included gorilla emojis.

Despite Garnacho swiftly deleting the post once he realized its potential implications, the Football Association (FA) is aware of it and might charge the young player with violating their guidelines regarding 'racially sensitive social media posts.'

The precise length of any suspension that Garnacho might face remains uncertain, but regulatory bodies could potentially refer to a similar incident from 2019 involving Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy as a precedent. In that case, Silva was suspended for one game and fined £50,000 by the FA for drawing a comparison between his teammate and an image associated with the Spanish company Conguitos, which had been criticized for its racial connotations.
