Newcastle United player is now on Gareth Southgate's radar after being pulled out of his current national squad

Gareth Southgate has now confirmed they are considering bringing Elliot Anderson to the England national squad amid the 20-year-old's withdrawal from the Scotland squad managed by Steve Clarke.

Anderson is eligible to play for Scotland through his paternal grandmother, who was born in Glasgow. He has represented Scotland in various age groups, starting from under-16. However, he has opted out of several recent call-ups to the Scotland under-21 team to keep his options open.

In March 2022, Newcastle United youngster even played for the England under-21 team in an unofficial friendly match against Arsenal's under-23 side.

This month, Steve Clarke included Anderson in the senior Scotland squad for the first time, and he initially accepted the call-up. However, he later withdrew due to a hamstring injury. This situation has piqued the interest of Gareth Southgate, who is keen to understand Anderson's future intentions. FA technical director John McDermott is closely monitoring the situation as well.

“We liked him and we do like him,” Southgate said about Anderson, via Express.

“He’s a player that’s doing really well. Obviously, he was called into their squad earlier in the week and I don’t know what the position is at the moment," the manager added.
