Newcastle's pursuit faces setback as player expresses preference for Tottenham, reveals Ally McCoist

Newcastle's pursuit of Al-Ittihad's Jota may encounter a roadblock, as reports suggest the 24-year-old winger would prefer a move to Tottenham if he decides to leave the Saudi Pro League in January.

Jota, who left Celtic for Al-Ittihad, has faced limited playing time due to foreign player registration rules in Saudi Arabia, prompting speculation about a potential move.

The Magpies are reportedly keen on securing a loan deal for the Portuguese in the upcoming transfer window. However, Tottenham's interest in adding a new winger to their squad could see them enter the race for the player's signature.

According to 90min, the winger has considered the prospect of reuniting with former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou at Spurs, with the duo having a successful stint in Scotland.

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe's side might face additional challenges in the transfer market. Premier League shareholders are set to vote on whether to block loan signings between clubs with the same owners later this month.

This decision could impact the Tynesiders' pursuit of the 24-year-old, especially if restrictions are imposed on deals involving the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which is associated with both the Magpies and Al-Ittihad.

Under the management of Postecoglou in Scotland, the attacker scored 28 goals in 83 matches. Joining the North Londoners on a loan deal could be a wise move for Jota, especially if he can rediscover the outstanding form that led Ally McCoist to label him a 'genius' last year.

"He is a player," said McCoist on talkSPORT after Jota produced a match-winning display for Celtic against Aberdeen. "I was looking forward to watching Celtic yesterday, and I did, I enjoyed them, I must admit. Jota, you and I talk about him all the time, he’s a genius."
