Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino personally called the Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta’s representative to try to surpass Southampton in signing him, according to Sport Bild.
Some Premier League clubs, including Watford, Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United and Cardiff City, were interested in Mateta in the summer, but Mainz director Rouven Schroder managed to fend off interest by extending the striker’s contract till 2023.
However, Southampton and Tottenham are now interested in the 22-year-old and reportedly, contacted Mateta’s agent Pierre-Henri Bovis about his client. Pochettino himself called the strikers’ agent to beat Southampton to signing him.
Mateta is currently injured and will not return until November. Reportedly, Schroder set a minimum asking price of €30 million for the Frenchman, while his market value is around €22 million.
