Matheus Nunes completed a £53 million transfer from Wolves to Manchester City this summer following a somewhat disappointing season at the club.
His return to Molineux is expected to be met with a hostile reception, with Gary O'Neil suggesting that the Wanderers' supporters might still harbor resentment due to the Portuguese going on strike to secure his move to the Etihad.
Although the manager has praised the 25-year-old's talent and expressed no animosity, it is unlikely that the home crowd has completely forgiven or forgotten his actions.
"Matheus is a talented player, isn’t he? He moved for that amount of money to the best side in the world. It shows the quality he has. It wasn’t part of the plan to lose him.
"I expected to have him here. We expected him to be a big part of that. And we were working hard on it.When Manchester City came calling, with the figures they’re talking about, we ended up where we did. Some players are tempted to act in that way, it’s not just Matheus. I don’t feel it helps, they’re being advised that maybe it does.”
When asked about the kind of reception Matheus Nunes will get, O'Neil added via Mirror:
“I’m not sure - normally you get a mix - but when people leave like that I would suggest it won’t be great.
“But I’m not going to tell Wolves fans how they should treat him. If we’re really nice to him, he’ll still try and kill us with the ball. If we boo and jeer him he’ll still try to kill us.
