Jamie Carragher has expressed doubts about Liverpool's chances of contending for the Premier League title this season and believes that two areas of their squad require improvement.
The Reds recently played to a 1-1 draw against Luton Town, missing an opportunity to narrow the gap with league leaders Manchester City. Jurgen Klopp's team delivered a subpar performance at Kenilworth Road and relied on a stoppage-time goal from Luis Diaz to avoid a potentially embarrassing defeat.
Having finished fifth in the previous season and undergone significant changes during the summer transfer window, Carragher still believes that Liverpool need to acquire a new defensive midfielder. Alex Mac Allister has been playing in that role this season.
The Liverpool legend also suggests that the team should bring in a versatile defender before they can truly challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title again.
“Liverpool are not ready to win the league. Jurgen Klopp and supporters know that right now. They want to get back in the top four but challenging again, they need another midfield player and a top-class defender," he said, via Liverpool World.
