Jamie Carragher gives verdict on John Stones revival at Manchester City

Jamie Carragher named John Stones as his 'player to watch' in 2021 after the defender's recent renaissance with Manchester City. The England defender looked destined to leave the club in the summer after falling out of favour with Pep Guardiola. But he has now started six of Manchester City's last eight matches. In that time, City have conceded only once, recording seven clean sheets in all competitions. Carragher believes his improved recent form could see him return to the national squad for the rearranged European Championship next year. “I thought he was done at City. I remember watching City in the Champions League in the summer, they were playing Eric Garcia ahead of him at centre-back," Carragher told Sky Sports. "He (Garcia) is only a young player but he doesn’t look like he’s physically ready for the Premier League, the size of him as well, and I thought it was a long way back for John Stones, Fernandinho was playing there as well. But I do think he's now in the team. Laporte has been left out for John Stones, you would have never thought that a few months ago, and if Stones can stay in the team, it brings England back into the equation."
