"It’s a pity": Julen Lopetegui makes Diego Costa admission after his performance vs Wolves

Wolverhampton played a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa in the West Mids derby on January 3 at Villa Park.

Daniel Podence scored the opener for Wolves in the 12th minute of the clash, however, ground owners managed to equalize the score as Danny Ings found José Sá's net after coming from the bench.

Julen Lopetegui's decision of playing Deigo Costa over Raul Jimenez appeared to be justifying after the veteran striker's superb performance.

For the fourth straight game under the newly appointed coach, the 34-year-old was chosen over the Mexico national, who didn't come off the bench.

Costa, who showed his most complete performance in the Molineux outfit since his arrival, stayed on the pitch for 66 minutes before being substituted by the club's new signing Matheus Cunha.

Speaking to Birmingham Mail in his post-match interview, Lopetegui stated why he preferred to have the former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid man on the pitch.

“Diego is a very experienced player. Maybe he doesn’t have the acceleration that he had in the past, but he knows his job. He helped us in our press and ordered us in the defensive phase.

“He has helped us to be able to have more continuity. In the end it’s a pity because he doesn’t have this energy or acceleration that he had.
