Stefan Ortega has stated that he wouldn't have made the move to Manchester City if he knew he had no chance of becoming the first-choice goalkeeper.
In an interview with 11 Freunde Magazine, the German goalkeeper admitted this regarding his situation at the Etihad Stadium. Furthermore, after being given a rare start against Brighton, the 30-year-old expressed his desire to play more regularly at City.
“I want to be the number one at Manchester City, otherwise I wouldn’t have come at all,” he said, via Manchester City News.
Since joining the Sky Blues last summer, Ortega has been exceptionally successful, firmly establishing himself as the club's top backup goalkeeper. Now, it appears that he is determined to compete for Ederson's position as Manchester City's No.1 goalkeeper.
While Stefan Ortega would likely be the starting goalkeeper for most Premier League and European teams, Ederson is an indispensable figure in this Manchester City squad. Even in games where Ortega plays, while he may match Ederson in shot-stopping ability, he doesn't possess the same level of distribution skills.
The former Arminia Bielefeld goalkeeper is excellent with the ball at his feet, but Ederson is arguably the best in the world in this regard. In a Pep Guardiola-led team, these distribution skills are extremely valuable for a goalkeeper.
Considering that Ederson has also improved as a shot-stopper since last season, Ortega's chances of starting appear more realistic at another club.
