Gini Wijnaldum reveals why he chose PSG over Barcelona

Gini Wijnaldum has admitted he initially thought he was on his way to Barcelona before Paris Saint-Germain convinced him to sign with a more appealing ‘project’. The 30-year-old left Liverpool at the end of the season as his contract at Anfield has expired. Barca boss Ronald Koeman had been confident of being reunited with Wijnaldum in Catalonia after building up a close relationship with his fellow countryman during his 18-month spell in charge of the Netherlands. However, the midfielder – keen to resolve his future before Euro 2020 – had a change of heart once PSG stepped up their interest, with Mauricio Pochettino determined to bolster his midfield ranks ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. "It was a difficult choice. We negotiated with Barcelona for four weeks but we did not reach an agreement," Wijnaldum told reporters ahead of the Netherlands’ clash with Group C rivals Ukraine. "PSG were just quicker and their project spoke to me more. To be honest, I thought I was joining Barcelona because at the beginning they were the only interested club. "PSG and Barcelona are both truly great clubs, and both are clubs where I would have liked to play. "I wanted to make my decision before the start of the Euros and in the end I chose PSG."
