Gianluigi Donnarumma has admitted he was not aware the shootout had even finished, after Bukayo Saka missed the last penalty kick for England.
The Three Lions opened the scoring already in the second minute, thanks to Luke Shaw’s goal. However, Leonardo Bonucci equalised the score in the 67th minute. The winner couldn’t be decided both in the main and extra times so the game headed into the penalty shootout.
Italy picked up a 3-2 win on penalties and were crowned EURO 2020 champions for the second time in their history.
Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Saka missed their penalties, as Donnarumma saved them all.
The Arsenal starlet went on to take the last penalty, and it got saved by the Italian keeper, after which he didn't celebrate.
"I didn’t celebrate because I didn’t realise we had won!" Donnarumma explained to Sky Sport Italia.
It was only when the 22-year-old saw his Azzurri teammates steaming towards him to revel in their victory that it occurred to him they were now European champions.
