French starlet linked to Arsenal, but expert warns against premature move

Ahead of the summer transfer window, Arsenal have been linked with the 20-year-old Elye Wahi from Montpellier, yet a French football expert Jonathan Johnson finds the deal unlikely.

Johnson writes in a Caughtoffside column, that it would make more sense for the French starlet to make a move to a "finishing school" club before turning to Premier League. He thinks that Wahi needs more experience to be able to play in an elite English club. As for now, two Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have been linked with the young Frenchman.

Wahi is part of the France Under-21 and has excelled in performance in Ligue 1 this season. In a total of 81 appearances for Montpellier, the young forward has scored 30 goals and has impressed with his skills on the ball.

Jonathan Johnson also argues that a deal with Wahi would not make the best sense from Arsenal's perspective either. Folarin Balogun, who is a similar player to Wahi is expected to be one of the fourteen players set to leave Arsenal this summer. Therefore, it would not be logical for Arteta's side to recruit a similar talent that he wants to trade. A young forward like Wahi, adds the football expert, will be deprived of a lot of play time, if he makes a move to Arsenal at this time. In turn this lack of play time have a negative effect on his development as a professional.
