Gus Poyet believes that Cesar Azpilicueta should leave Chelsea at the end of the season.
The former Blue has raised concerns about Spain International's drive and passion for the club, questioning whether he still possesses the fire that once burned so brightly within him.
The 33-year-old has been a vital player for the West London outfit for over a decade, captaining the team since 2019 and contributing to their nine major trophy wins.
However, despite his unwavering loyalty to the club, it seems that the defender's days at Stamford Bridge might be numbered, with only a year left on his current deal, it is expected that next season will be the veteran's final one in Lodnon.
Poyet claims that the upcoming transfer window this summer presents the perfect opportunity for Azpilicueta to depart from the team as his position in the team has been compromised due to the emergence of other players such as Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who have surpassed him in the pecking order.
“When he’s [Todd Boehly] going through four coaches, there is something else – the squad, the system, the number nine [Romelu Lukaku] not being there, the pressure – it’s not the same to play for Chelsea winning than to play for Chelsea losing,”
“I’ll make an example – Azpilicueta. I don’t know what’s going through the head of Cesar Azpilicueta but so many people play ahead of him in his position that you have to think ‘Okay, I’m not going to play. I’m not here next season’.
"Loftus-Cheek plays in his position, so you have to start thinking something is not right, the same for other players on the pitch.”
