Wesley Fofana could potentially miss out the entire season, as reported by journalist Simon Phillips.
The Frenchman underwent anterior cruciate ligament surgery over the summer and while writing on his Substack Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, the journalist expressed concerns about his chances of returning to action this term.
Injuries have been a persistent issue for the 22-year-old since his high-profile £75 million transfer from Leicester City to Chelsea in 2022.
In the previous season, the Frenchman managed just 15 appearances in the Premier League for the Blues. Fofana's current injury, which involves damage to his ACL, is undoubtedly a severe one, making it unsurprising that he might be sidelined for the rest of the season.
While this would be a setback for Mauricio Pochettino, the Argentine coach does have alternative options to consider in the defender's position.
Thiago Silva, Axel Disasi, Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile, and Trevoh Chalobah are all capable of performing in central defense. Although Badiashile and Chalobah have had their share of injuries, they are not as severe as Fofana's, and there is optimism that Benoit may make a swift return.
