Leicester City youngster Wesley Fofana is currently on international duty with France U21 for the UEFA U21 Championship qualification games.
Les Bleus faced Armenia U21 in Yerevan and celebrated a 4-1 victory. Fofana started from the first minutes and played the full game.
The win in Yerevan was France’s 8th victory in 9 games so far as they are currently unbeaten and have conceded just 2 goals, having scored 28.
“Armenia is a good team. It was a difficult game. The first half was difficult. The second half was better because of more intensity. It was a nice victory,” said Fofana in an interview with VBETNews following the game.
Didier Deschamps reportedly wanted to call up Fofana to the French senior team for the Nations League fixtures in place of injured Raphael Varane. But opted for Ibrahima Konate as the next match versus Austria is scheduled on the same day as the Leicester defender’s wedding.
With the World Cup on the horizon, it is expected that Deschamps will do some changes to France’s first-team squad and Fofana says “the World Cup is a good objective.”
“It’s okay now I’m in France U21 and I’m focusing on the pre-season with Leicester City and after maybe the World Cup,” said the 21-year-old.
The Foxes defender had a tough season as he suffered a serious injury ahead of the 2021/2022 campaign. Fofana sustained a broken leg and ligament damage during the 2021/2022 pre-season.
The Foxes star says that he is feeling good after a long rehabilitation and is planning on being with Leicester next season.
“It’s good. It was a long rehab because of the serious injury. Now I’m good, I’m fit,” concluded Fofana.
France’s upcoming game in the qualification will be against Ukraine U21 on June 9.
