Shaka Hislop has indicated that Zack Steffen's career took a downturn due to his decision to sign with Manchester City.
In a discussion on ESPN FC about which player in world football he would like to mentor, Hislop named Steffen, who spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough.
The 28-year-old's time at the Etihad Stadium seemed uncertain after a subpar performance in the FA Cup semi-final in April of the previous year, highlighting his struggles with the possession-oriented style favored by manager Pep Guardiola.
Hislop suggests that Steffen's choice to join Manchester City was a significant misstep in his career.
“I thought, one of the most talented goalkeepers that the US has ever produced,” he said, via Manchester City News.
“And I thought the City move and everything that happened as a result took away from what could’ve been an outstanding career.”
