Manchester United confirms that their longest-serving player Phil Jones is set to leave the club this summer after 12 years at Old Trafford.
The central defender has been a key figure in the team upon his arrival from Blackburn Rovers, during Sir Alex Ferguson's final campaign at the club. Despite this, the Englishman played 5 games in over three years due to a re-occuring knee problem. As a result, it was no surprise to the club fans and supporters that Jones will depart from the club in June, when his contract expires.
"To wear this shirt just once, to wear this badge and represent everyone associated with it, was an honor," says the 31-year-old in a shared Twitter message to his fans.
"I've missed playing football" said Jones who has made over 200 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 6 games. Impacted by his injury and long period of being sidelined, the player expressed his gratitude to everyone and cherishes the time he spent in the club, doing what he loved.
To conclude his message, the United defender wishes the best of luck to Erik ten Hag in his efforts of building a strong team and acknowledges the big amount of work that the Danish coach has put into his service.
