Concerns mount for Chelsea as star's injury takes a turn for the worse

Chelsea find themselves facing a challenging international break as Raheem Sterling and Levi Colwill return to Cobham for different reasons, but Mauricio Pochettino's worries extend beyond their circumstances.

Despite being back at the Surrey training ground, the Blues' treatment room is still bustling with injured players, including Christopher Nkunku, Romeo Lavia, Wesley Fofana, Ben Chilwell, and Carney Chukwuemeka.

Meanwhile, Conor Gallagher remains a reliable presence. Over the past 12 months, the 23-year-old has solidified his importance to the team, featuring regularly for the Londoners and making significant contributions to the England squad.

The midfielder, who had a breakthrough season with Crystal Palace in 2021/22, has become a key figure for both club and country.

Despite starting just three games for the Three Lions, his recent form has caught attention, making him a strong contender for a starting spot in the upcoming tournaments.

With injuries and absences affecting the squad, Mauricio Pochettino will rely on Gallagher's consistency as they navigate through the challenges that lie ahead.

“He has got tremendous drive. This week was a classic for me. He has come with a bit of a knock from the weekend but he walked through the door saying ‘it is a bit sore but I will be fine for Friday’.

"There was no way he was going home, there was no way he wasn't going to give himself every chance. He wasn't able to train for the first few days but he was determined he would be available and that, in a nutshell, is what is going to be one of his greatest strengths which will allow himself to achieve everything he might in the game because his mentality is outstanding.”

However, the Blues might find cause for concern in these remarks. Gallagher has been a consistent presence in every league match this season, in addition to participating in two out of the three Carabao Cup fixtures. Only Robert Sanchez and Thiago Silva have logged more playing time than him thus far, highlighting his crucial contribution to the team's progress, despite Pochettino's squad currently residing in the middle of the table.
