Chelsea's decision on Conor Gallagher's contract renewal may depend on the performances of Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia, according to reports. The club are monitoring how the two summer signings integrate into the team once they recover from their injuries.
Nkunku, a £52 million signing from RB Leipzig, and Lavia, who joined from Southampton for £58 million, have been sidelined due to knee and ankle injuries, respectively. Gallagher has benefited from their absence, starting every Premier League match and captaining the team at times.
While Gallagher's contract expires in 2025, Chelsea are reportedly delaying contract talks, waiting for Nkunku and Lavia to return to fitness. The report suggests that Mauricio Pochettino wants to assess his best starting XI with the availability of all players.
Gallagher, capable of playing multiple roles, has garnered praise for his performances this season. Despite Chelsea's willingness to sell him in the summer, Gallagher's strong displays have increased his value.
However, there has been no progress in contract negotiations, and Chelsea's approach reflects their stance during the summer transfer window when they were open to selling him for £50 million. Pochettino expressed satisfaction with Gallagher but emphasized the importance of alignment between the player and the club in contract talks.
"He’s a player who is doing fantastically. He’s an amazing player and we are so happy with how he is doing things," he said, via Express UK.
