The 7 Arsenal players with the most to prove under Unai Emery

It’s been a tough start to the season for Arsenal. Unai Emery is trying to get Arsenal to press high when in the opposition’s half and to play out from the back when they have the ball in their own. So who in the current squad has the most to prove when it comes to adapting to the head coach’s new style at Arsenal?
  • Mesut Ozil
The German star has struggled in the first two games of the season, operating in two different positions. But Ozil still failed to make an impact. Question marks remain about just how suited he is to the Spanirad’s style of play.
  • Grant Xhaka
Another of Emery’s five captains, but Xhaka has found himself being replaced in both of the opening two games of the season - with the axe falling at half-time against Chelsea. With Lucas Torreria continuing to adjust to the English game, Xhaka will be well aware that his place in the starting XI is massively under threat.
  • Hector Bellerin
Bellerin is seen as a player who could really progress under Emery’s tutelage and coaching set-up, but he still has plenty to prove after two years of stifled progress.
  • Shkodran Mustafi
The German centre-back has failed to impress since arriving from Valencia and many expected him to be moved on this summer. He never looks comfortable with the ball at his feet either, something Emery clearly wants from his defenders, so the jury is very much out on the World Cup winner.
  • Aaron Ramsey
Ramsey’s quality is not in doubt, he has shown over the years just what he can bring to Arsenal. Ramsey was substituted in the game against City and left out of the starting XI completely against Chelsea - a clear indication that he has work to do to nail down a starting spot.
  • Petr Cech
Cech insists he is comfortable playing the way Emery wants, but he has looked far from comfortable so far - so he still has plenty to prove over the coming weeks if he wants to keep Leno out of the side.
  • Sead Kolasinac
He was given a fresh start under Unai Emery but had a difficult pre-season before picking up a serious knee injury which will see him sidelined until October. When he returns to fitness he will have to really step up if he wants to force his way past Nacho Monreal into the starting XI. If he fails to impress, Kolasinac could find himself being moved on in the summer.
