5 Bundesliga players that could replace Jan Vertonghen at Tottenham

Jan Vertonghen will be a free agent in June, as his contract at Tottenham expires. The 32-year-old has spent eight years at the North London, and now it seems that he will not extend his stay. Vertonghen has said that he is weighing up the “pros and cons” of leaving and, even if nothing is decided, Spurs will need to start planning for life after a player who has made well over 300 appearances for the club. Meanwhile, if the centre-back leaves this summer, Jose Mourinho should find a replacement for him. So here are six Bundesliga players who could replace Vertonghen next season, with Spurs said to be looking to Germany for signings. Dayot Upamecano, RB Leipzig Upamecano, who has been a fantasy defensive signing for Europe’s top clubs for the last few seasons, is heading towards the final year of his contract and Leipzig may be forced to accept a lower fee or risk losing him on a free. The 21-year-old has played the full 90 minutes in the Leipzig 3-0 Spurs match at the Red Bull Arena in March to dump the North club out of the Champions League. Robin Koch, SC Freiburg The 23-year-old has had unbelievable few seasons with Freiburg, having only left hometown club Kaiserslautern for the Bundesliga in the summer of 2017. Freiburg manager Christian Streich has described Koch as “a warrior”, which makes him sound like a good replacement for Vertonghen. Matthias Ginter, Borussia Monchengladbach Tottenham were heavily linked with Ginter previous summer however, the transfer never happened. Initially tipped for big success at Borussia Dortmund but held back by his utility man status, he has benefited hugely from settling down at centre-back since he signed for Gladbach three years ago. Ginter scored a beautiful backheel flick against Belarus in the game which secured Germany’s Euro 2020 qualification in November and Joachim Loew gave him a telling compliment when he called him “a bit underrated”. Nico Elvedi, Borussia Monchengladbach At 23, Elvedi has established a reputation as a clever distributor of the ball as well as a capable defender. The same could be said about Vertonghen, which suggests the Swiss international could be a suitable option for Spurs. Ozan Kabak, Schalke 04 The 20-year-old already has almost 40 Bundesliga appearances to his name which, for a defender his age, is quite impressive. Kabak moved to VfB Stuttgart from Galatasaray last January and was thrown straight into the starting line-up by then-coach Markus Weinzierl. He went on to make 17 appearances and never failed to complete 90 minutes, eventually winning Bundesliga Rookie of the Season. Source- football.london
