Diego Simeone has refused to criticise referee Danny Makkelie after Atletico Madrid defender Felipe was sent off in the first half of their 2-0 Champions League loss to Liverpool.
Both Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane marked their names on the scoresheet to hand the Reds another three points.
In the first half Felipe was given his marching orders by the Dutch referee after catching Mane on the back of the leg with his studs as Liverpool tried to break.
However, Simeone believed the red card was unlucky, he stopped short of criticising Makkelie for the decision. He said:
“We started quite well. The sending off was another game with one player less. If you look at the Felipe incident, on another day that wouldn't happen.
“When you play against a team like Liverpool you have to say credit to the team for being calm and taking on responsibility in the second half. Other teams would have fallen apart.
“Perhaps that goal from Suarez which was ruled out could have got us back in the game. Our responsibility now is to get better."
