Didier Deschamps explains why he picked Zouma over Aymeric Laporte in latest France squad

Didier Deschamps has defended his decision to select Kurt Zouma over the likes of Dayot Upamecano and Aymeric Laporte in his latest France squad. The manager said the Chelsea star has proven he’s the ‘better’ option since putting his injury problems behind him. Zouma has bound his place at the heart of Chelsea’s defence alongside Thiago Silva this season. Laporte was among those left disappointed as Deschamps announced his latest 26-man party earlier this month "There’s competition everywhere," the France head coach explained at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday. "Kurt has been with us for a while, he’s been called up many times but hasn’t played that much. If I pick him it’s because I think he’s better than the other people because of what he’s doing at Chelsea. He had a few injuries in a row but now he’s been very fit for a while, he’s very calm, so he’s here." Deschamps added: "If you’re asking why I picked those four central defenders, I have to choose. We have three games in nine days so obviously everybody will play, including Kurt."
