In a recent column for the Daily Mail, football pundit Chris Sutton didn't hold back as he dissected Manchester United's midfield struggles, pinpointing the diminishing impact of their £70 million man, Casemiro.
United secured the Brazilian's services last year, and the midfielder made an impressive mark in the previous season, exceeding expectations with his performances in the heart of the midfield.
However, the narrative has taken a different turn this season, with injuries hindering his contribution. In the games he has managed to feature in, the once-dominant force seems to be a mere shadow of his former self.
Sutton highlighted the contrasting situation at rival clubs Arsenal and Manchester City, both boasting top-tier midfield talents. The pundit expressed his belief that the Red Devils are currently lacking the midfield prowess displayed by their counterparts, further emphasizing the urgency for a midfield overhaul at Old Trafford.
“Casemiro performed well last campaign. Better than I expected of the Brazilian in his 30s. But he is now injured and when he does feature, he doesn’t look like he’s got the legs to keep up with the demand of this level,” Sutton stated.
“Not like Rice, or Rodri, or the other elite midfield men out there who can control proceedings. The decision to let Casemiro sign a long-term deal is looking more and more foolish because he is not the answer to the lack of protection being provided by the midfield.”
