Chelsea completing £25m transfer could cause bigger problems for Frank Lampard

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard may finally sign a new goalkeeper, however, Edouard Mendy's arrival could well come at a huge cost for the club. Kepa Arrizabalaga arrived at Chelsea for a record £72million back in 2018 with huge pressure on his shoulders. The Spaniard has struggled to live up to his hefty price-tag and following a string of errors back in January, the 25-year-old was unceremoniously dropped for a five-game stretch. Lampard's been backed by the club owners to completely transfer his side. Chelsea are expected to let several players leave in the final few weeks of the transfer window to help trim down their squad. But they're not done with incomings with Mendy expected to be the seventh signing of the summer. An initial fee of £18.2million has been agreed with Rennes, potentially rising to £25m with add-ons. His imminent arrival will spell bad news for Kepa though with Mendy likely coming straight in as the club's first choice. All signs suggest Chelsea will be signing a top-class goalkeeper to replace Kepa but that could prove costly for the club in the long run. Chelsea have indicated they're not going to try and sell Kepa this summer, partly due to a lack of interest. But they're almost certainly going to take a huge hit on the £72m they spent on him two years ago. His price tag may only decrease if he plays even less this upcoming season.
