Celtic and Rangers bosses planned to apply to join the English league, according to
The Sun.
Peter Lawwel, the chief of Celtic sent secret emails to then Rangers chief Martin Bain with a confidential strategy.
Eleanor O’Neil, the assistant of Lawwell, sent the mail to Barrie in 2011.
The Sun reported that the document’s first section was titled:
“What would the Old Firm bring to English football?”
Old Firm rivals were confident their departure would benefit Scottish football, making it more competitive.
The report said that the large travelling support enjoyed by both teams would result in a "
welcome revenue boost for many clubs", adding: "The two teams also benefit from a global following similar to that enjoyed by only a few teams in England such as Manchester United and Liverpool.
Rangers and Celtic chiefs were due to have a meeting; however, it never took place, as Rangers plunged into financial crisis.
