Canelo Alvarez ‘seeking cheaper opponent than Billy Joe Saunders’

Saul Canelo Alvarez is reportedly searching cheaper contestants than Billy Joe Saunders for his next fight. The Mexican was due to face the Brit on May 2, however, the fight was scrapped by the coronavirus pandemic. Canelo needs to return to boxing with a fight in September. However, its is not easy as just rearranging the Saunders fight for a new date. Alvarez will now potentially have to fight behind closed doors, meaning the event will lose out on millions of dollars in ticket revenue. The 29-year-old generated $8.2million (vs Sergey Kovalev) and $8.7million (vs Daniel Jacobs) during his last two fights. Thus, according to BoxingScene, Canelo’s team are now examining cheaper options in case he has to compete behind closed and lose out on the live gate. Source: talksport
